This week I was inspired to make some homemade lip balm for the first time.
Part of the reason I was inspired to make lip balm is because I just recently received the best lip balm I have ever used as a bonus for signing up for a yearly membership in a group called Wild Feminine Un.leashed. This group is a virtual temple of women who gather together to support one another and talk about all things wild. It is a phenomenal place to cultivate sisterhood and to be seen and heard in your total raw beautiful authenticity. I will do a full testimonial for this virtual temple of sisterhood in another post because I have truly gotten SO much out of it, but I wanted to mention it here because it is from this group that I received my first Dirty Balm. It is AMAZING, and I love the way it makes my lips feel.
Inspired by my dirty balm, I decided to make just a single portion of lip balm and I mainly followed the ingredients and recipe from this website that makes hard lotion called hardlotion.com. There’s a video tutorial there on how to make lotion bars, and lip balm. Super awesome stuff!
Alright, without further ado, here’s my recipe!
1/2 teaspoon beeswax
1/2 teaspoon shea butter
1 teaspoon coconut oil
about 10 drops of your desired essential oil (optional) – I used orange essential oil!
Usually when lip balm is made it seems to be made in bigger portions, so here is the basic ratio of ingredients I used if you want to multiply the amount.
Ratio: 1 part beeswax, 1 part shea butter, and 2 parts coconut oil
Put your ingredients (except for the essential oil) in a glass jar, then put the glass jar in a pot full of an inch of water. Bring the water to a simmer on the stove, and allow the ingredients to fully melt. (You can also use a double boiler. This is basically a makeshift double boiler.)
Remove from the stove and let the jar cool for a few minutes. Then add about 10 drops of your essential oil, if you wish to add some.
Pour into your lip balm container of choice, and allow it to cool and harden.
I got this container for free when I went to Lush a few years ago, because they gave me a sample of lotion in it. I just found it the other day and realized it was the perfect size for lip balm.
It looked like the picture below after about an hour, and was ready to use.
I was very pleased with the way this turned out. It feels really nice and smooth on my lips and it was extremely easy to make. Definitely better than most store brands that I’ve purchased but not quite as delicious as the Dirty balm 🙂
I totally recomend giving this a try. It feels empowering to know how things are made and to realize that you have the power to make amazing body products.
